roxalitoSnoring is the respiratory noise produced during sleep that is derived from the vibration of the pharyngeal walls.
Snoring occurs when the flow of air through the mouth and nose is physically obstructed.

The characterization of snoring as a disorder is false, since most healthy people snore some nights at some stage of sleep, especially when they are very tired.

It is estimated that about 30% of the general population snore every time they sleep, while 80% snore only occasionally.

During the sleep, snoring occurs because of the muscle tone relax. The passage of air through narrow passages cause vibration of the soft tissues creating the well-known "melodic" sound, with an acoustic power of 90 Dezibel! .

During the day, no snoring is produced, even if there are conditions, because we have normal muscular tone, which does not allow the characteristic vibration.

obstructive apneaMore than 40 million adults snore.

Although snoring is more common in men, many women also snore.

In sensitive individuals, when muscle relaxation takes place, the tongue presses the tissue at the back of the throat and the airway begins to close.

The air is rushing through this narrow space of the upper airway and the increased wind turbulence causes the loose tissue, which winds back and forth, causing the annoying sound we know as snoring.

The phenomenon of noisy breathing is observed in people of all ages. Sometimes it is a noise of exhaling in the nose.

What Causes Snoring?

Causes factors are many and varied. We will mention the most important ones:
  • The age. After the 50s they are snoring a lot more than before the 50s. After 65, it overcame over 50% of the population.
  • Sex. Men (36.5%) snore about 2 times more often than women (18.9%).
  • Long interruptions of breathing (more than 10 seconds) during sleep caused by partial or total obstruction or blockage of the airway.
  • Poor muscle tone in the throat and tongue: The muscular tone is regulated by the central nervous system, and there is a clear idiosyncratic predisposition for some people in this regard. Throat and tongue muscles can be too relaxed, which allows them to collapse and fall back into the airway. This can result from deep sleep, alcohol consumption, and use of some sleeping pills. Normal aging causes further relaxation of these muscles.
  • Long soft palate and/or uvula: A long soft palate or a long uvula (the dangling tissue in back of the mouth) can narrow the opening from the nose to the throat. When these structures vibrate and bump against one another the airway becomes obstructed, causing snoring.
  • The posture of the body. In the supine position the tongue tends to fall back and narrow or block the throat.
  • The body type. The dense body type (wide skeleton with large muscle mass, belly, strong limbs and short neck) predisposes much more than the athletic or subtle body type. Easily measurable is the perimeter of the neck (FT Men <43 cm, Women <41 cm.
  • Large body weight (BMI> 35) and other metabolic causes (eg hypothyroidism). It is directly related to the thickness of the pharyngeal walls and to the respiratory work, due to the weight of the abdominal wall, which should be moved to each inhalation. However, there are people with normal weight that are sick.

Snoring treatment

oral split
In many cases, snoring leads to more serious health conditions. Therefore, it is advisable to look at snoring and treat it as a treatable condition. Look at sleep tests and common symptoms to find out the causes and effects that can be affected.

A professional analysis of your sleep behavior, through an initial examination and a sleep test, will help you with the correct diagnosis and treatment guidance.

The most common ways to deal with sick snoring is to use CPAP machine, various surgical operation and dental splints.

The primary and primary treatment is to treat and correct the factors that cause it, such as surgical correction of a nasal septum and hypertrophic adenoids, body weight loss, hormone related regulation, etc. e.g.

In those cases where either primary treatment did not yield, or there is an intolerance to the cpap device, or anatomical reasons make it difficult to treat (eg, big tongue, little jaw ...), or the patient prefers a less invasive solution, there is choice of treatment using an intraoral narthex - a new pioneering method, internationally recognized, which in many cases has produced excellent results.

"Simple" snoring is harmless if it does not bother sleeping your mate in bed.

Treatment with oral appliances is extremely effective in managing snoring and helps all those who suffer during sleep.
Our patients are pleased to report that, among other things, they do not feel  uncomfortable when they sleep with others.
