New data on sleep apnea.

According to a new study that received the Graduation Award at the 19th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the relationship between the volume of the tongue and the size of the bones of the oral cavity in patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea can help dentists to calculate accurately and success the device to be used for treatment.
Although jaw and splint splints have proven to be a safe and effective treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea, the prediction of efficacy in each individual patient has been problematic. The researchers looked at whether anatomic factors are related to the therapeutic effect of splints.

Each of the 49 participants surveyed used a two-piece adapted splint during sleep. The outcome of the treatment was assessed by polysomnography after about six weeks of application of the oral device. The 24 patients responded to the treatment, recording a decrease in the Mood Hypnotic Index by more than 50%.

Because the patients who responded to treatment had a larger volume of tongue for a certain size of the oral cavity, the researchers argued that defining this relationship could help to predict the success of the treatment.
